Chasing Sound, a documentary about Les Paul, is available for free on Hulu.com. The documentary covers his life, music, and inventions and is very much worth watching. If you want to watch this, I recommend doing it soon because videos on Hulu.com usually expire after being available for a while.

Guitarist Les Paul passes away at 94.

Guitarist Les Paul passed away yesterday. Many younger players may not be familiar with him outside of the association with the Gibson Les Paul, but without him, music would likely be very different. In addition to being a guitarist, he was instrumental in developing multitrack recording technology and solid-body electric guitars.

Gibson has a tribute to Les Paul on their site with a biography and comments about Paul from musicians including Slash, Satriani, and others.

If you aren’t familiar with Les Paul, his music, and other accomplishments, you may want to check out the documentary Les Paul: Chasing Sound. If you have Netflix, you can stream the documentary through your subscription.

Below is just one example of Paul’s playing. Here, he is jamming with Jeff Beck.

A brief introduction explaining what the blog will be about along with some details about my musical background.

First of all, welcome to totalguitarist.com and the blog!

What to Expect

Before I get into posting articles for this blog, I want to give an idea of what you can expect as far as content. The primary focus of the blog will be answering questions submitted by readers. I will also be posting various articles that aren’t suited for the lesson section, videos of guitarists I find interesting, and more. I will mostly steer clear of topics like guitar gear, news related to guitar, etc. Those topics don’t interest me that much and there are other publications that cover them better than I could.

If you have any questions related to guitar playing, music theory, or music in general, feel free to submit your questions.

A Little About Me

I’ve played guitar for about 16 years. During that time I have dabbled in many different styles, including classical, fingerstyle, rock, jazz, blues, metal, and more. I also play classical piano, a little banjo, and have done a bit of composing.

My taste in music is pretty eclectic. I play and/or listen to jazz, classical, rock, Celtic, and many other styles. My favorite guitarists include Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Hedges Leo Kottke, Pierre Bensusan, and too many others to name.
